Numerous candidates for un-invention come to mind: the assault rifle, the Citizens’ United decision, the reality television program, the Chicago Statement, the handgun, the Jackass movies, various illicit narcotics, troll farms, the electoral college, and the Nashville Statement are just a few, and the un-invention of any one of these would arguably make the world a better place. I’m actually hopeful that perhaps one day some of these things might be gone from the earth.
But if I could un-invent absolutely anything today, war would be that thing. I can’t help but wonder what the world would be like if the concept of war never entered the mind of a leader, if the very idea of killing and destruction for political ends were so inherently repugnant, so completely antithetical to human civilization, that no leader of any nation would ever conceive of making war against another nation.
Wouldn’t that be something.
